As global capital flows into Namibia’s booming uranium, gold, and copper deposits, African explosives and chemicals provider AECI Mining is urging producers to prioritize water stewardship to secure operational continuity in the sub-Saharan nation.
In an industry outlook published Friday, the company warned that production growth across the country’s mining sector will hinge on how efficiently miners manage scarce natural resources, particularly as operations scale up in one of the driest regions in sub-Saharan Africa.
“Water remains one of our most valuable resources, particularly in this part of the world, which is why collaboration between mining companies, technology partners and local stakeholders will continue to be so important in the years ahead,” said Christel Stergiadis, Managing Director of AECI Mining Namibia. “As the sector continues to grow, there is an opportunity to adopt practical solutions that strengthen productivity while making better use of the resources on which mining depends.”
Namibia’s mining boom comes alongside heightened environmental scrutiny and severe water constraints across Southern Africa. AECI Mining highlighted that water management goes beyond meeting corporate sustainability targets—directly impacting operating cash flows, unit costs, and plant reliability.
The supplier is pitching an integrated value-chain strategy—combining explosive fragmentation technology with chemical flocculants and engineering solutions—to maximize the recovery and recycling of process water within mineral processing circuits. Advanced solid-liquid separation and improved thickener performance can significantly boost water reuse, lowering reliance on freshwater supply infrastructure and raw intake.
“As mining companies continue to pursue greater operational efficiency while strengthening their ESG performance, technologies that recover more water from every tonne processed will become increasingly important,” the company stated, noting that downstream water recovery depends directly on upstream decisions starting from blast quality and ore fragmentation.
The push comes as Namibia cements its position as a key supplier of critical minerals and nuclear fuel, where energy and water security remain the primary bottlenecks to industrial expansion.
