Engineering Giant Knight Piésold Bets Big on Namibia’s Multi-Sector Boom

One of Africa’s oldest engineering consultancies is aggressively expanding its footprint in Namibia, positioning itself to capture a wave of incoming capital as the Southwest African nation emerges as a major continental hub for mining, energy, and infrastructure development.

Knight Piésold, a global multidisciplinary consultancy founded in South Africa in 1921, is leveraging its century-long African heritage to entrench itself in Namibia’s rapidly evolving economy. Since establishing a formal domestic presence in 2008, the company has grown from a specialized engineering firm into a critical partner for both state-backed infrastructure plans and private sector mining projects.

The expansion comes at a pivotal time for Namibia, which is drawing intense international interest following massive offshore oil discoveries, burgeoning green hydrogen prospects, and an ongoing expansion of its traditional mining base.

“Namibia remains one of the most strategically important regions within this footprint due to its growing mining sector, infrastructure development opportunities, renewable energy potential, and government-driven development plans,” says Günter Leicher, Director at Knight Piésold.

Expanding Across the Frontier

Operating from a network that stretches across South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and beyond, the firm is deploying a highly integrated regional model. Its Namibian operations, spanning key hubs like Windhoek, Keetmanshoop, Lüderitz, Rosh Pinah, and Ondangwa, are backed by the deep technical resources of its South African offices in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, and Durban.

This cross-border technical pipeline allows the firm to deploy highly specialized services, including geotechnical, structural, tailings dam, and water resources engineering, to complex and capital-intensive projects that would typically stretch localized consultancies.

The firm’s growth strategy is deliberately diversified to hedge against cyclical downturns in individual commodity markets. While it remains heavily anchored to Namibia’s vital mining sector, it has rapidly built up its civil infrastructure, transportation, and water security divisions, the latter a critical national priority given the region’s arid climate.

“Together, the Namibian and South African teams collaborate seamlessly to provide multidisciplinary engineering solutions that are innovative, sustainable, and aligned with global best practice,” says Cilliers Mostert, Managing Director of Knight Piésold Namibia. “Knight Piésold’s success in the country is deeply connected to its philosophy of combining local knowledge with international expertise.”

Beyond Traditional Commodities

Indicative of this diversification strategy is the firm’s appointment to deliver the high-profile Namibia Cricket Ground (NCG) High-Performance Stadium project in the capital, Windhoek. The venue is being built to comply with strict International Cricket Council (ICC) standards, requiring specialized reinforced concrete works, advanced civil layout, and long-term infrastructure support.

The project highlights how engineering firms are pivoting toward social and commercial infrastructure to tap into secondary economic windfalls from the country’s resource boom, notably in tourism and hospitality.

“This project represents a major investment in Namibia’s sporting infrastructure and positions the country to host international cricket events whilst supporting athlete development and tourism growth,” Leicher says. “We believe this project showcases Knight Piésold’s ability to diversify beyond traditional mining and water infrastructure into social and sporting infrastructure that contributes to national development.”

Driving Structural Transformation

As global ESG mandates increasingly dictate how international capital is allocated, Knight Piésold is also facing growing pressure to align its internal operations with modern corporate governance standards. A key pillar of its current operational strategy involves accelerating local content development and driving gender transformation within a historically male-dominated industry.

The company is placing specific commercial emphasis on supporting women in STEM careers, introducing structured mentorship programs, and advancing professional development pathways within its local corporate structure.

“The future of engineering depends on creating opportunities for diverse talent and supporting greater inclusion across the profession,” Mostert says. “Across Namibia and Southern Africa, women within Knight Piésold continue to contribute significantly to engineering, environmental consulting, project management, sustainability, and technical leadership.”

Ultimately, the firm’s aggressive positioning reflects a broader consensus among institutional investors: Namibia’s macroeconomic story is transitioning from an exploration-driven narrative to a long-term execution and construction phase.

“From the monumental Neckartal Dam to cutting-edge mining developments and sporting infrastructure, the company continues to demonstrate its ability to deliver projects that shape industries,” Mostert says. “With strong leadership, multidisciplinary expertise, regional support, and a deep commitment to Namibia’s future, Knight Piésold is not only engineering projects , it is helping engineer the future of the country itself.”
