Windhoek Renovations Plant Hire, one of Namibia’s leading earthmoving and equipment rental companies, has taken delivery of the country’s first-ever Liebherr TA 230 articulated dump truck (ADT), signaling a strategic shift toward the German manufacturer’s heavy-haulage lineup.
The acquisition of the 28-metric-ton payload truck, alongside a new 21-ton Liebherr R 920 Litronic crawler excavator, was finalized during an April handover. The move underscores growing capital deployment in Southern Africa’s extractive supply chains as domestic firms upgrade fleets to support infrastructure and mining expansions.
Founded in 1985 by Robert Wirtz, the family-owned contractor operates a fleet of 70 machines across mining, road maintenance, and demolition sectors. The new ADT has been immediately deployed to a gold mine near Karibib, where it is hauling fill material for a slimes dam construction project.
“The performance, reliability and production output delivered so far have been nothing short of impressive,” Alex Wirtz, technical service and sales manager at WR, said in an interview. “Investing in world-class equipment like the TA 230 is part of our ongoing commitment to offering our clients the highest standards in earthmoving and mining operations.”
The transaction expands WR’s existing pool of Liebherr machinery to more than 30 units, reinforcing a 30-year procurement relationship with the equipment manufacturer’s regional arm, Liebherr-Africa.
For global equipment manufacturers like the Liebherr Group, which posted revenues exceeding 14 billion euros ($15.2 billion) in 2025, aftermarket service contracts remain highly lucrative and vital for retaining market share against emerging low-cost competitors.
“Aftermarket support is critical in plant hire and earthmoving because it directly impacts machine uptime, safety, operational efficiency, and long-term asset value,” said Tendayi Kudumba, general manager of earthmoving at Liebherr-Africa. “Equipment downtime is out of the question, and OEM support is key to ensuring that machines operate at peak performance, allowing our clients to run profitable operations.”
